Spices: A Rainbow in Your Spice Drawer
GOD made these spices, and they’re such a blessing. A pinch can take something plain and make it vibrant and bursting with flavor, and each one adds its own note of deliciousness. I choose organic spices from brands I trust, in glass jars when I can find them, and I reuse those jars when I buy in bulk. Their natural colors make a beautiful little rainbow in my spice drawer, too.

Benson’s Table Tasty
I know, Benson’s is really more of a seasoning than a spice. But it has spices in it, it lives right in my spice drawer, and I use it in almost everything, so here it is again! It’s salt-free with no potassium chloride, and it’s the one I reach for first.

I’ve bought the 2 lb bag on Amazon for years, but it’s unavailable there right now, so you can get it straight from Benson’s.

Organic Black Mustard Powder
I started experimenting with mustard seeds and powders because I wanted to recreate the mustard on store shelves without all the sodium. Then I learned how exciting it was that mustard powder can help support sulforaphane formation in cooked broccoli, and that made me love it even more. I use it in my salad dressings too, and it is such a fun one to get creative with in your own recipes.
TIP: Whenever I have broccoli or other cruciferous vegetables, I sprinkle on ground black mustard and Benson’s at least.

Simply Organic Cayenne Pepper
I like to add heat to most of my dishes: my Embrobi Egg Mash, my soup, my salad dressings, and my morning water with apple cider vinegar and lemon juice. That heat comes from capsaicin. Large studies have linked eating chili peppers regularly with better overall health and even a longer life, and researchers are studying capsaicin and liver health too. It’s also thermogenic, which means it gives a small boost to how much energy the body burns. Not everyone loves spicy, but I hope you’ll give a little pinch a try.

Simply Organic Paprika
I choose regular paprika over smoked. Smoked paprika can overpower the food, and this one doesn’t. It adds a nice flavor and a pop of warm color, and those natural red pigments are carotenoids, a kind of antioxidant.

Fusion Select Sumac
Sumac adds a bright, tangy flavor, almost like sorrel. I put it in my hummus, my salad dressings and right on my salad, and it’s wonderful on baked chicken with the rest of my spice lineup.
TIP: Check the label. Some sumac has salt added. This one says no salt.

Healthworks Superfoods Organic Turmeric Powder
Turmeric adds a warm, earthy depth to my soup and my baked chicken. I like to get mine from the spice itself, because it tastes so good, and I try to get as many of my nutrients from food as I can, in the form they were created for us. I keep turmeric and black pepper side by side in my spice drawer.
TIP: It’s a rule in my kitchen: whenever I add turmeric, I grind black pepper right after it. Black pepper helps the body absorb turmeric’s curcumin so much better.
“Then GOD said, ‘I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.’”
